Someone should tell the OGC and TSO bookshops about the ITIL Refresh

At OGC's website the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing, while at TSO neither hand has any idea. The IT Skeptic seeks in vain for somewhere to pre-order the ITIL Version 3 books.

Boy I'm sure glad OGC outsourced publishing to someone who has their act together. From the TSO online bookshop, today:

ITIL - The IT Infrastructure Library
After consultation with service management organisations and ITIL user groups, ITIL (and its books and CD-ROMs) are being restructured and updated to reflect changes in technology and demands for IT related business change.

The new ITIL series of publications is designed to provide you with advice on how to prepare and deal with IT related management problems:

Introduction to ITIL
Service Support
Service Delivery
Planning to Implement Service Management
Security Management
The Business Perspective
ICT Infrastructure Management
Application Management
Software Asset Management
Small-Scale Implementation

An exciting new series indeed!!

Let's check the Coming Soon page:

Due to Publish May 2007
Guide to Ship Sanitation – Third Edition
Published: 30th May 2007 ISBN 10: 9241546697 Price: £24.00
Improving Project Performance using PRINCE2 Maturity Model
Published: 30th May 2007 ISBN 10: 0113310315 Price: £20.00

Due to Publish June 2007
Managing Successful Programmes Book 2007 Edition

Managing Successful Programmes CD-ROM 2007 Edition
Published: 30th June 2007 ISBN 10: 0113310412 Price: £76.38

Now I'd be the first to admit the importance of ship sanitation - I'll be travelling on a ferry next month - but I would have expected to see the ITIL Version 3 books there by now. Seek in vain on TSO's site.

TSO's online Get-Best-Practice site now redirects to the OGC's best-management-practice.com, which at least has heard of the Refresh and has (yet another) Refresh information and news page.

Also check out the new look book covers for ITIL Version 3. Excellent design and graphics! (No sarcasm - I think they are superb).

Best of all is the news that "You will be able to order the five core titles from Wednesday 21st February 2007". Rushing to the bookshop, we learn that

Within the last two years the knowledge found in over 10 OGC titles has been updated and there are now some six titles which form the basis of the series. The older library is still available in PDF only at www.tso.co.uk/itil.

It is like the Twilight Zone. The IT Skeptic tries to be skeptical rather than complaining but sometimes...

And pre-ordering the new books? You got me. Can anyone enlighten us please?

TSO At Last

Here we are via TSO at last:

I absolutely hate their shopping cart though.

Pre-Order V3 Here

Well as the US's largest reseller we decided to take up TSO at their word when they announce availability effective May 30 2007 and posted all publications in all available forms that same day. The response has been fantastic from TSO - they have truly helped us shape how folks can guarantee a copy. Something we here in the US are very concrened about as we suspect supplies to be grabbed by UK and the Commonwealth folks first! Currently we are taking orders from some very unexpected places and have even had to tread deftly through requets from Nigeria that promise a 'purchase order' in the post!

So - order away and we shall do our very best to keep every honest with the date and shipment speed.
V3 will be in various forms - books, PDFs locked to a personal PC and a promised annual subscription to their website. I agree with teh Skeptic's comment though as TSO authorized us to sell the latter - OGC tried to question our reseller agreement because we went early!

So when does 'available' actually mean 'available' - ironic given we are all parts of the same service management universe.

Van Haren now seem to be taking pre-orders too

I know Ian's comment is a plug, but I'm leaving it up because
(a) I did ask the question and
(b) there is an interesting stoush going on here with ITSMI "going early"

Note that Van Haren now seem to be taking pre-orders too.

As an aside, Amazon aren't, but they seem to have a low expectation of it's reception as they already offer ea market in second-hand copies LMAO

Come June 1, I'm sure the resllers will have more orders than they can fill immediately. I am not sure which reseller is on best terms with TSO to get the best share of the first print run - you need to make your own decisions on that.

Looks like it here

You can pre-order the ITIL

You can pre-order the ITIL books in the UK from the itSMF - might be worth checking the home page for your local chapter.

Not convinced they will be published on time, but that's another story!
