who is BoothMagnet?

England's Law: all social media channels degenerate into babble. #PINK14 twitter stream is following the rule. BoothMagnet is brilliant satire of the vendor marketing social media mavens. Sadly it is achieving that satire by trashing the twitter stream even more than the vendors are (marginally).

I wrote about how The future whispered to me at "PINK14" Pink Elephant ITSM Conference. Another less positive harbinger of the future at PINK14 was BoothMagnet

Who is BoothMagnet? We know little. BoothMagnet clearly doesn't like BMC, but BMC were so annoying in their tweeting on the PINK14 twitter stream that it isn't surprising (BMC weren't the only offender but they clearly won the award). Heck, in the twisted world of online viral marketing it could even be BMC: they got lots of mentions out of it. But I don't think so.

I'm pretty sure BoothMagnet is a he.
He understand sophisticated social media tools: within a day or so he bought 35,000 followers, he engineered a Klout score of 51, and he recruited an army of paid re-tweeters.
He was at Pink14, and will be at SITS14 and Knowledge14.
He quotes South Park.
He appeared on twitter on February 21st, at the end of PINK14, I'd guess as a consequence of this conversation

He clearly doesn't like BMC, which wasn't surprising given their dominance of the PINK14 tweet stream with endless product and booth adverts. BMC said it themselves

In response, BoothMagnet generated this storm of tweets

by paying a small army of tweet-whores, using this service i think

Chris Dancy called it xenophobic

which is a bit OTT, but he has a point. I don't see too many North Americans complaining about the vendors. Either they're too polite or too immune to a PT Barnum approach to IT marketing. That doesn't excuse such marketing behaviour. Social media is international, and the Pink conference is becoming so too. Vendors, you are offending part of your constituency when you turn our twitter stream into a carnival sideshow. Roll up! Roll up!

Either way, it didn't work. The vendor-spam kept coming (remembering Pink14 ended on the 19th and the Exhibit hall booths closed on the 18th) ...

WE GET THE MESSAGE!!!

BoothMagnet may be annoying as hell with the tweet storm but he is only marginally more annoying than BMC. Can you please both ease off on our twitter stream?
