In praise of silence

The modern person is more likely than not to be unable to cope with silence.
There has to be a sound-track to life. Ear buds. Musac. Stereo. TV. Deafening shops. Aircraft.

The workplace is the same.
Some say they concentrate better with noise but this can't be true. What they mean is they reduce the discomfort of noise addiction. Silence has always been the optimum environment for concentration.
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance said never give your bike to a workshop that has a radio playing.
More importantly, silence is an essential ingredient of mental health. We're driving ourselves mad with the racket.
